AI’s contribution to Environmental Conservation
Environmental Conservation, which is primarily preserving our planet's
ecosystem for sustainability of life and protection of species of animals, plants,
insects, birds etc, for our future generations. The unprecedented
environmental challenges that we are facing, need a faster understanding
and action of issues affecting our environment. At this juncture, we see that the
integration of artificial intelligence is a crucial tool that can enable us to do
things in a faster and well-directed manner. Researchers and policymakers, by
leveraging the capabilities of AI, are innovatively mitigating, managing and
monitoring our natural resources. It is believed that AI would play a
multifaceted role in environmental conservation as it would and is being
applied in various domains that are working on shaping a sustainable future.
A sustainable future would involve the optimization of conservation strategies.
The approach would need to be data-driven decision-making by policymakers.
Today data is captured by diverse mediums which include satellite imagery,
oceanographic data, socio-economic data, surveys of ecological resources,
etc. The integrated insights into this data using AI could be a great help in
balanced resource allocation and policy formation. Keeping in mind the
requirements of all the stakeholders and working on a balanced development
path, is crucial for general acceptability. To plan conservation areas on land
has to be in sync with the requirements of socio and economic factors.
Similarly, marine protection for ecological significance has to be in sync with
economic and connectivity factors. Manually analyzing the available data for
this purpose might not give us an optimum solution and might take time.
AI-driven algorithms can help optimize the spatial distribution and maximize the
effectiveness of conversation efforts, by minimizing conflict points of various
factors.
A vast amount of heterogeneous environmental data gets generated by the
sensors and Internet of Things devices that are being used for monitoring in
forestry. AI algorithms can process these datasets to come out with
meaningful and valuable insights that can facilitate decision-making. A lot of
data is generated by satellite imagery, which if processed by an AI algorithm,
can give data related to forest cover, deforestation and land use change,
which can be used to access the detection of environmental threats and with the
timely intervention can help mitigate its impact.
Similarly, the conservation of endangered species such as tigers, lions, elephants
etc, is another area that has gained importance in maintaining Biodiversity
balance. Earlier wildlife monitoring was human-intensive, and a lot of field
surveys and monitoring was required. It was practically impossible to keep a
watch of all the activities simultaneously across the wide and wild landscape
in real-time. The activities were time-consuming, costly and lacked real-time
action. With the advent of AI-powered devices and technology of remote
sensing, camera traps, and satellite imagery, a more efficient approach to
Biodiversity monitoring has been achieved. The huge amount of data using
Machine Learning is analyzed from all the available resources, including
species, track their movements, and assess population dynamics, and real
time and more directed actions are taken.
Conservationists are not only faced with the problem of Monitoring
Biodiversity, but also how the environmental changes can impact the habitats
of various species. AI helps analyze historical data of Climate, Change in
Land use, Deforestation etc, and can help predict the future trends. A timely
intervention and a proactive approach by the conservationists can help in
mitigating the potential threats that Environmental Changes can pose to
biodiversity, thereby enabling them to devise more targeted approaches and
resources, help create protected areas or help restore affected areas.
Big money, greed and insensitivity, has put a large number of species on the
verge of extinction due to illegal wildlife trade. AI powered tools are assisting
law enforcement agencies in intercepting and combating these illicit activities.
Machine learning algorithms analyze large datasets of online marketplaces,
social media platforms, transportation networks etc to identify any patterns
that are indicative of wildlife products trade. By flagging suspicious activity AI
powered tools assist law enforcement efforts in intercepting and disrupting
wildlife trafficking networks from doing illegal shipments of wildlife products.
One of the advancements in combating illegal wildlife trade has been using AI
models to predict trafficking routes and vulnerable species hotspots, and take
preemptive action instead of reactive action.
The Land usage for agriculture has increased significantly with the increase of
world population, which is putting a lot of pressure on forest land and water
bodies, which makes it one of the focus areas for environmental conservation.
Sustainable agriculture is the only solution to ensure that we are able to feed
the growing population, which can only be achieved with the use of AI. AI
enabled sensors and automated machinery can help maximize yield with the
minimization of resources used, like water, fertilizers, pesticide and even land,
thereby reducing the environmental impact. Machine learning algorithms can
also help in suggesting type of crops, irrigation cycle, pest control
requirements, based on the analyses of soil and predicted weather conditions.
In today’s times, the biggest concerning factor is climate change, which is
posing a major threat to both the biodiversity and ecosystem. AI is being seen
as a solution to a wide range of issues of resource optimum utilization and its
management. Renewable energy of solar and wind power integration into the
power grids, can reduce the reliance on fossil fuels, which can make a lot of
difference in the fight of climate change. AI Model analysis of climate, which is
a complex simulation of atmospheric, oceanic, and terrestrial processes, helps
predict future weather forecasts, enabling policymakers and governments
develop strategies to mitigate any predicted flood or drought situations, and
reduce the effect of the same on their population.
To conclude, we need to acknowledge that AI’s ability to analyze large amounts
of data, has and can give us the ability to make more informed decisions, use
available resources better, mitigate climate changes more efficiently,
safeguard biodiversity and ecosystem, and have sustainable life on this planet
for future generations.
